What is "dA Zine"? --Your dA Zine FAQ

Journal Entry: Mon May 12, 2008, 7:24 PM

Glad you asked!

Please read through this for the specific criteria about submitting deviations and articles and all other questions you might have about or magazine! We appreciate your support!

So, What is "dA Zine"?
dA Zine is a "zine" that features the work of Deviants just like you! Each issue is divided into four sections: Traditional Art, Photography, Digital Art, and Literature. In each section we will have an article written by one of our staff columnists plus a minimum of 2 features. In addition to these sections, there will be extra goodies like a Spotlight Feature, comics, critics, and guest articles. dA Zine is ever evolving and we value all input!

What can I do to help?
There are many ways you can help!

If you are interested in being a full-time staff member, check out our Staff List and look for any vacant positions. If you’re interested in an open position, send us a note telling us which position you’re interested in and we will send you an application. Just follow the instructions in the application and we will go from there!

If you’d like to submit on an issue-by-issue basis, we welcome guest articles, comics, and other similar submissions. Just shoot us a note with what you’d like to do and we’ll go from there! Be aware that we do heavily edit articles for quality purposes.

Want a less involved way of supporting dA Zine? Promote us with our stamp!

How can I read "dA Zine"? Can I get a hard copy?
Every issue is submitted as a downloadable PDF file. You will need Acrobat Reader to view the issue.

To download an issue, right-click on the preview and select “download link”. Or, click the orange monitor icon to the left (with the “add to favorites” and “view gallery” links). Both methods will take you to the same zine!

All issues are also formatted for print. If you would like a card copy, send us a note. We do ask for $5 USD to cover the cost of printing and shipping. We print all issues on high-quality color printers. They’re really quite snazzy!

I want to talk to you guys!
Great! We're a fairly chatty bunch. We have our own chat that can be found at #dAZineHQ where =GoaliGrlTilDeath, `Nestalgica, and =ChiliSan can be found most of the evening and weekend hours (U.S. time). If you want a real-time answer to your question, try us there! Don't forget to highlight us, though, by typing out user name in your message. If things are slow we might be off doing something else!

So, how did this project get started?
Believe it or not, it was a class project! Back in September of 2006 =GoaliGrlTilDeath was assigned a project in her Advanced Digital Media class at Washington State University. This project was supposed to be a 4 page ‘zine’ however, in true DeviantART and Jessie fashion, 4 pages turned into a full issue thanks to the zealous support of `Nestalgica and =ChiliSan. After receiving an A+ on said project, Jessie, Max, and Chili couldn’t stop at one issue, and thus dA Zine was born. In it’s history, dA Zine has had a volunteer staff numbering over 40 people at a single time. We have had contributions from deviants on every continent (except Antarctica).

Wow, you faved my work! Thanks!
If you work was +faved by this account that means A) It's been featured in a past issue or B) it's going to be featured in a future issue. So pat yourself on the back; you deserve it!

What is "The Parting Shot"? Can I do a Parting Shot?
The parting shot is our fun way of closing out every issue. As you might have seen, the very last page of every issue is a picture of dA Zine displayed in a random way. In the past we've had "dA Zine" written with splattered mud on a car windshield to being "tattooed" on the bottom of someone's foot.

Would you like to do your own Parting Shot for us? Excellent! Shoot away! Send us a note with your idea and then email us the highest resolution image you have to our email (da.zine @ hotmail . com, without the spaces). If we can, we will use it!
Don't want to shoot it but have a great idea? Send us a note and we'll set up the shot for you! You will get full credit of course!

I have a Deviant that I really think you should feature. How can I suggest them?
Awesome! Just send us a quick note with a link to the deviant’s gallery and/or the deviation(s) you think need recognition. Let us know why you think we should feature them!

I want you to feature my art. What do I do?
We prefer that someone suggest you rather than having you suggest yourself. However, in some rare cases we may accept self-suggested submissions.

If you would like to be featured, send us a note. Let us know which deviation you want featured and give us a short description of why you think we should feature that deviation. You can write about your process, your goals, your thoughts at the time, a story to go with it... whatever you want. We can’t guarantee we will feature you, but we will consider it.

What do you take into consideration when selecting features?
We try and feature the best and brightest of DeviantART’s untapped talent. Besides a quality deviation and gallery, we consider things like pageviews, community involvement, and overall talent and artistic vision. We try and avoid featuring those who are already well known on DeviantART in favor of those who are lesser-known.

Do I have to give you my real name if I am featured?
Not at all. All people will be referred to in this Zine by their DeviantART name (i.e. I will be =GoaliGrlTilDeath, not “Jessie Hockett" ).

Will people be able to find my deviation for comments and such?
Of course! Starting with Issue No. 6, there will be embedded hyperlinks in the downloadable PDF file. Titles, images, and names will all be hyperlinked to the appropriate page.

Do you ask permission to use these images?
Yes. We get permission from the original artist/author for every single work we feature or use. It’s time-consuming, but if we can’t get written approval we will not use it.

Do you have something I can use to brag about being featured?
Yes, we do. Use our handy-dandy stamp (if you're a subscriber)!

When is stuff due?
We will have all due dates and anticipated release dates in our most current journal entry under “Staff Updates”. We try to release all issues on the first of every month however our schedule is extremely flexible due to busy personal lives.

When will dA Zine be published?
We try and shoot for the first day of each month, give or take a few months!

Can I be a guest-submitter?
Sure! Just shoot us a note letting us know what you’d like to do! We accept guest-articles, comics, and other contributions.

What kind of time commitment is dA Zine for a staff member?
That all depends on the position and your personal work style. Time spent each month can range from a couple hours for Scouts to hours upon hours for a particularly dedicated columnist. Most work can be spread out during the month with the exception of editors- you guys have a week or two to do your job!

Know your work style and make sure you take that into account when timing your work for deadlines. We do not accept lateness: if you are late more than once for reasons other than death, severe injury, or some other tragic event, we will open your position up to the public. Sounds harsh, but if we have a hope of making a deadline that is how it must be.

How will you be contacting us?
All general updates will be made via journals. MAKE SURE dAZine IS ADDED TO YOUR WATCH LIST WITH JOURNAL ENABLED! Not reading a journal is not an excuse for being unaware of something. We will update deadlines and release dates in the “staff update” section of our journals, plus all other pertinent updates.
If there is a message we need to get a specific staff member, we will send a private note.

What?!? The Staff List says my position is open! What gives?!
Chances are, you have managed to miss the deadline more than once. Chances also are that we have sent you multiple notes about deadlines and we have sent you a note letting you know that we have opened up your position to the public.

Why are you guys so harsh when it comes to deadlines all of a sudden?
In the past we’ve been lenient when it came to deadlines, thus our magazine was always cronically late being released. We’ve decided to change that starting with Issue No. 7. We will be running this zine much like any newspaper or magazine that you can find in stores; deadlines are strict so that release dates can be made. If we let one person slide we have to let everyone slide and the next thing you know the release date has passed you buy and you’re missing half of your content.

Can I advertise in dA Zine?
We have considered accepting advertising in dA Zine. However we have not figured out the legal issues of registering dA Zine as a non-profit organization in the state of Washington so until we figure that out, sorry, we are not accepting advertising.
On the other hand, if you’re a lawyer specializing in non-profits and want to do a little pro-bono work, let us know!

But I want to throw money at you guys!
We like subscriptions :ninja:

What is your guys’ email?
You can email us at da . zine @ hotmail . com (minus the spaces of course!) We try and check it regularly but a note is a much quicker!

You haven’t answered my question!
Send us a note! We’ll answer if we can!

have you eplored an on demand publishing service such as lulu.com? There would be no cost to you and the purchaser would get a high quality zine.

Just a thought

If we want to get hard-copies of the magazine, do you print and ship? How much would it cost to get a print of a particular magazine?

Peeps were hatin on it, before I left my comment.
:icondazine:
I have them printed at our campus printing press then I mail them via snail mail :D It costs me $4.80 to print one copy (special paper or something), and then another 30 cents to ship in the US, 60 outside of the US. so $5.10 is what it costs me to ship and send. They are very beautiful prints on nice paper; the quality is usually better than you see on screen. So if you want one, let me know.
